Message from the President Dear Fellow Residents,
Louise and I attended the Spring concert of the Beecroft Orchestra on 22
September. The Orchestra played a newly commissioned piece by
Margaret Brandman which beautifully celebrates 10 years of conductor,
Joanna Drimatis; another world premiere from the talented Simone Lobbia
(a composer based in Perth); and two pieces by Sibelius. What a great concert!
As I write, Louise and I have departed with a group of friends to visit
Morocco, continuing on to Tunisia and Andalucia before Louise returns to
work in Adelaide. Our dog and two cats are being left in our absence in
the hands of a late twenties male!!
We
now know who are our elected Councillors for C Ward in Hornsby Shire
Council and Epping Ward in the City of Parramatta Council.
Congratulations to all the elected councillors, and be assured the Trust
will continue its tradition of working closely with the councillors for
the benefit of our community. Warren
Wardell has been elected mayor of Hornsby, and Verity Greenwood, Ben
McSweeney, and Matthew Conley are our three C Ward councillors. How does
this compare with your thoughts after the "Meet the Candidates" night
held by the Civic Trust? CLICK HERE for a list of the other elected councillors in Hornsby.
As
for Epping Ward of the City of Parramatta, Sreeni Pillamarri,
Cameron Maclean, and Xiao (Charles) Chen are our councillors. The
council website should have details of their elected councillors later
this week. CLICK HERE.
Alternatively results can also be viewed on the official NSW Electoral Commission website. CLICK HERE
We recently held another Meet the Candidates evening for the by-election
in the State seat of Epping following the resignation of the Hon
Dominic Perrottet. Because NSW Labor decided not to endorse a
candidate. We therefore we had only the two candidates who had, at
the date of the meeting, registered with the Electoral Commission.
These were Monica Tudehope for Liberals and Duncan Voyage for Greens.
Each of these candidates spoke well and their answers to the questions
from the floor were revealing.
A full list of all the candidates is now available on the Electoral Commission’s website. CLICK HERE. Then Click on “Who are the Candidates”
Following the Hornsby Shire Council election, it is fitting to honour
the work of the Hon. Phillip Ruddock who served for many years as our
Federal member. This is a role that has only a few direct links to us as
residents – although lots from a broader perspective. As someone who
has lived in a number of Federal electorates over my life time I cannot
think of any other member who so regularly turned up to community events
and who sought the opinions of residents on local issues. He may not
have always implemented what he heard – but he always listened. Retiring
after 43 years from the Federal parliament, Phillip then began serving
on Hornsby Shire Council. Here his skills in chairing meetings, bringing
people together to understand arguments and coming to grips with local
issues in a financially responsible manner came to the fore. Despite the
difficulties that the old quarry in Hornsby and the change in shire
boundaries imposed on residents in Hornsby, Phillip kept on working
towards what he felt benefitted residents. Even though he was a proud
resident of Pennant Hills, I can personally say that he did pay close
attention to our villages. Yes, we had our differences and I often
failed to succeed in my very well argued positions, but I always felt
listened to and my views respected. Thank you Phillip, for a lifetime of
service, with more causes I am sure still to be fought for.
Hannah Street Planter Boxes
The Beecroft Cheltenham Civic Trust is calling for volunteers to assist
with watering the planter boxes in our Hannah Street village.
This will require no more than half an hour per month.
We aim to create a roster of four parties with four people per party.
Each
party will meet at 7.30am on Sundays in the the village, collect
watering cans from The Garden Clinic and then water the Planter Boxes.
If you can participate, please join the group by visiting CLICK HERE

Public Meeting on the new State Government Housing Strategy Earlier
this year the State Government gazetted a new housing strategy to
address the state housing shortage. This new strategy will affect
housing development in both Hornsby and Parramatta councils. Many
councils are currently negotiating with the state government as to how
the housing strategy will apply within their individual council areas.
The Trust is proposing a public meeting on Thursday night 21st
November 2024 when our two councils will be able to explain what
the impact of this new legislation will have on Beecroft and
Cheltenham.
More details will be provided in later eNews.
Civic Trust Spring Walk in October The Trust will be holding a Spring Walk on Sunday afternoon the 13th October.
The walk will once again be in Beecroft and Cheltenham and will explore that which makes our suburbs so special.
The Walk this Spring will follow Walk 12 in the Beecroft Cheltenham History Walks Book
(Edition 2).
The walk will start at 2pm in the eastern carpark at Cheltenham Railway Station, facing Sutherland Road.
The walk will be circular in nature and finish back at the station around 4pm, an easy 2 hour walk with short talks on the way.
One should wear suitable attire for outdoor walking such as hat, sturdy walking shoes, water, and sun protection.
We will be entering Lane Cove National Park so dogs are not allowed. The
degree of difficulty of walking is moderate as we will be following a
fire trail and a bush track. Expect a short rest and talk at Ahimsa, the
National Trust property that was the home of Marie Byles.
The walk will be led by Ross Walker and Sheila Woods.
Numbers are not restricted. All are welcome.
Any questions contact Ross Walker on 0412 257 556.
